Raleigh, NC --The William Peace University women's basketball team fell to Lynchburg College on Saturday evening, in Raleigh, NC, 87-63, in their first of two back-to-back weekend games. The Pacers now drop to a record of (0-3).
The Pacers controlled the first quarter, coming out to a 6-0 lead with steals by Deja Umstead, Mikayla Ray, and Dejah Cheatham. The team would grab their largest lead of the game with 0:35 left on the clock in the first quarter from a layup by Deja Umstead to put them up 19-10. In the second quarter, the Hornets pushed back with an 11-point run to lead 23-19. WPU would only score 7 points in the second quarter, while Lynchburg would add 30 to lead 42-26 heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw the Pacers push back a bit, as Dejah Cheatham hit two back-to-back 3-pointers to bring WPU back within 12 points. Jessika Schutte would bring the Pacers within 10 on a jumper at 1:41, but the Hornets would go into the 4th quarter with a 61-47 lead. The final quarter saw Lynchburg add another 24 points to win 87-63 over WPU. Rebounds would be the name of the game as Lynchburg out-rebounded the Pacers 54-23.
Whitney Walker led the team with 23 points and 7 rebounds. Deja Umstead notched 13 points, while Mikayla Ray was right behind her with 12 points. The Hornets were led by senior forward Caroline Naumann, who finished the night with 35 points and 13 rebounds.
The Pacers will have a quick turnaround as they take on Salem College on Sunday, in their first conference game of the season. Salem is currently (3-3) overall and (1-0) in the conference. The 6:00 p.m. game will take place in the Hermann Athletic Center in Raleigh, NC.
