RALEIGH, N.C. -- The WPU men's basketball team suffered a tough loss to North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday night. The Battling Bishops defeated the Pacers 99-86.
The Pacers went back and forth with the Bishops in the beginning of the game. The Bishops went on a run towards the end of the first half. With the score tied at 36-36, N.C. Wesleyan went on a 16 to four run to lead 56-40 as the first twenty minutes came to a close.The second half began with the Bishops controlling most of the possessions. Despite an aggressive effort, the Pacers were unable to close the gap that the Bishops had created in the first half. The Pacers were hampered by turnovers in the second half, where they accumulated 10 of their 18 total turnovers. N.C. Wesleyan was led by big man, A.J. Frye, who contributed 28 points.
Sophomore John Burwell lead the team with a double-double, contributing 19 points and 11 assists. Burwell also lead with 8 rebounds, just two rebounds shy of a triple-double. Sophomores Trey Bryant and Joshua Jones, and senior, Kori Anderson each ended the night with 12 points. The Pacers will look to get things back on track as they return to non-conference play. WPU will travel to Lexington, Virginia on Saturday, December 6 to match up against Washington and Lee University. The Generals are currently on a three-game winning streak and will face Ferrum College on December 2 before taking on the Pacers.
