RALEIGH, N.C. -- The WPU volleyball team finished their regular season with a pair of victories solidifying second place in the USA South Conference and earning the opportunity to host a portion of the USA South Tournament in the coming week.
The Pacers faced Mary Baldwin in their first game of the Saturday morning quad-match. In the first set the two teams went back and forth with points, until a kill by
Sha'Nice Frazier, a kill by
Hailey Stout, a service ace by
Mya Parks, and another kill by Sha'Nice Frazier would push the Pacers ahead 13-6. From that four-point streak and onward, the Pacers would dominate the remainder of the set.
The Pacers opened up set 2 with a 7-0 spread. The Fighting Squirrels would find hardship as
Bergin Gillespie tallied an impressive consecutive four service aces in a row putting the Pacers up 12-1. With WPU's strong offensive attack, the third set was quickly taken by the Pacers (25-5).
Set three would open up with two kills from
Brienna Laskowski, a kill from
Lindsay Alford, a kill from
Liana Solomon and several errors from the Fighting Squirrels to put the Pacers up 7-1. The Squirrels were unable to gain offensive momentum as senior,
Carson Williams, tallied 11 digs during the match. The Pacers took the set and the match (25-13) with a game-winning ace from #11
Lindsay Alford.
The Pacers second game fo the the day would take place at 4:00 p.m. against the Spirits of Salem College. Prior to the game's start, the WPU seniors were recognized for their final home game of the regular season. Seniors,
Josie Richardson,
Liana Solomon,
Lindsay Alford, and
Carson Williams were all escorted by friends and family to center court. The WPU community also took the opportunity to recognize the seniors of Salem College as well.
The first set against the Spirits was a back and forth set with both teams trading possession of the game. The Pacers went up with a 18-12 lead after three back to back kills by
Mya Parks, however the Spirits fired back with four unanswered points. With the first set tied at 20-20, the Spirits scored another five points, four of the five points, being WPU errors. The Spirits sealed the victory in set 1, 25-21.
Set two would fall in favor of the Pacers as they came out swinging with a 9-2 run. The Pacers would take a 16-7 lead before the Spirits would begin to climb back into competitive territory. A string of kills by Mya Park,
Brianna Davis,
Lindsay Alford, and
Mya Parks would boost the Pacers to a 22-16 lead, and from there the Pacers would finish the game 25-16.
The third set showcased the Pacers' domination as they controlled the lead for the entirety of the set. WPU finished the set quickly with a score of 25- 15. The fourth and final set would prove to be an exciting one as the Spirits battled for the chance at a fifth set. With WPU leading 20-19, The Pacers closed the game with a string of kills by Brienna Laskowski and
Lindsay Alford, followed by a service ace by Laskowski, an error by the Spirits and a final kill by
Brianna Davis.
Senior,
Lindsay Alford led the game with 15 kills. Senior,
Liana Solomon had a season high 52 assists and Senior,
Carson Williams had 29 digs.
With the victory over Mary Baldwin and Salem College, the Pacers improve to (13-3) in conference and finish the regular season ranked second in conference. With this ranking, the Pacers will host first round and quarter final matches of the USA South Conference Tournament. The Pacers will prepare for the conference tournament starting next week.The first games of the tournament will take place on Tuesday, October 31. Game times will be announced in the following days.
