WINSTON SALEM, N.C. -- The WPU women's soccer team showed effort in attacking the Spirits of Salem College however, the Pacers would come up short with Salem College taking the victory 3-0. The Pacers drop to (1-6) overall and (0-2) in conference play.
The game got off to a strong start with both teams battling. The Spirits of Salem College showed an aggressive offense out-shooting the Pacers 33-2 with 16 shots on goal. The Pacers made some changes to their starting line-up putting freshman,
Jessika Schutte in net. Schutte made 13 saves for the Pacers.
Schutte shared after the game, "Today I feel like we came out pretty strong especially after coming out from a pretty bad loss the day before and we knew this team was going to be better. We kept our heads straight and started fresh today. For me I had a lot of fun today being back in goal, in the position I played my whole life up until high school! I'm really proud of the fact that we shut them down the second half and really frustrated them. "
All three goals came in the first half for the Spirits as the Pacers kept SC off the scoreboard in the second period. Salem is ranked number one in the USA South East Division and are undefeated in conference play.
"I'm really proud of how the girls came out and worked hard to hold regionally ranked Salem College to three goals overall. I am especially excited that we were able to keep them out of our net the entire second half including the last 10 minutes when we played down a player. I thought Schutte did a great job of stepping up to play in goal today as well. That combined with an exceptional effort from our backs and mids really made for a competitive match," shared Head Coach,
Mary Puckett.
The Pacers look ahead to their next match-up against inner-city rival, Meredith College on Wednesday, October 4. The 7:00 p.m. kick off will be hosted at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Angels of Meredith College are second in the conference with a record of (6-3) overall and (1-0) in conference.
