ROANOKE, Va. -- The William Peace University women's basketball team won its sixth straight game of the season by defeating Hollins University 60-46 on Tuesday night.
Tyler Mercer scored 14 points to lead the Pacers over Hollins.
The Pacers 60-point total was enough to get the job done tonight against Hollins, but was 44 points less than the team put up against Southern Virginia on Monday night. Nonetheless, the Pacers defense stood out over the course of the game.
The Pacers ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take the lead at 20-13 and would never surrender it again. The Pacers' second quarter was exquisite, limiting Hollins to only four points for the entire quarter. The Pacers went up 32-17 at the halfway point.
The Pacers used a balanced scoring attack to finish off Hollins in the second half and never allowed the game to get too close.
Mercer led the Pacers with 14 points while
Nadine Ealey recorded 13 and
Makayla Ray scored 12. Ray nearly earned a double-double with nine rebounds and Ealey grabbed eight herself.
THE BIG PICTURE
The Pacers are off to a hot start at 7-2 and bring in the new year with two straight wins. The team has shown that it can win in myriad ways and has proven it can compete with any other team. William Peace will welcome three straight conference opponents to the Hermann Athletic Center to start the conference schedule.
SIX STRAIGHT
The win over Hollins University is the women's team's sixth straight win of the year and the longest streak in school history (stats going back to 2001). The team has won the games through several different avenues and the Pacers have proven a tough team to put away.
UP NEXT
William Peace will begin the conference schedule at home against rival Meredith College on Saturday in the Hermann Athletic Center at 5 p.m, following the men's basketball game.
