WPU Volleyball Splits USA South Quad-Match against Covenant, Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The William Peace University volleyball team traveled to Salem College for a USA South quad-match Friday night. The Pacers dropped their first match of the night to Covenant but bounced back to beat Salem, 3-1.

"That first match was a good one against a really talented Covenant team. We played pretty well but came up just short in each game we lost," said head coach Kevin Daniels. "We fought hard at the end of game four, coming back from a huge deficit, but it's hard to dig your way out of holes against a team like that. We ended the night on a positive note, but we have to fine-tune some things and find a way to fight through some tough lulls. We'll learn from it and get better."

The Pacers dropped the first two sets to Covenant by scores of 25-23. They kept the match alive with a 25-18 win in the third, but the Scots (5-7, 2-0 USAS) closed it out in the fourth, 25-20.

Laura Bland racked up a career high 22 kills in the loss along with seven digs and a block assist, while Carson Williams also established a new career best with 35 digs. Tempestt Frazier finished with 13 kills, three digs and two block assists. Liana Solomon recorded a double-double with 44 assists, 17 digs, three service aces, a kill and a block assist.

Jessica Seahorn and Schuyler Moore led the Scots' attack. Seahorn notched 14 kills, nine digs, two service aces, a pair of assists and a block assist. Moore had a near triple-double with 40 assists, 11 digs, eight kills and a service ace.

WPU got off to a slow start against Salem as the Spirits took the first set, 25-21. The Pacers (11-3, 2-1 USAS) bounced back though, taking the next three by scores of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-21.

It was a well-rounded attack from the Pacers led by Solomon, who posted a triple-double consisting of 40 assists, 11 kills, 10 digs and a pair of service aces. Like Solomon, Bland did a bit of everything with 14 kills, eight digs, six block assists, five service aces, two assists and a block solo. Frazier reached double figure kills once again with 13 of them, as did Mya Parks with 10 kills, seven digs and two service aces.

Tyler Moulton paced the way for Salem (4-6, 0-2 USAS) with 17 kills and eight digs. Kyle Taffer tallied 12 kills and four digs.  Hannah Delcamp dished out 48 assists to go with eight digs, four service aces and a block assist.

The WPU volleyball team turns around tomorrow traveling to Maryville for two more conference matches. The Pacers face Wesleyan at 5:00 p.m. followed by Maryville at 7:00 p.m.

Video coverage will be available for both contests.
