Volleyball Takes Two on Opening Day of Seahawk Invitational in Historic Fashion

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – It was a historic day for the William Peace University volleyball team, as they kicked off the opening day at the St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawk Invitational on Friday. The Pacers took down the hosting St. Mary's, 3-1, followed by an absolutely dominating, 3-0 victory over Medgar Evers.

WPU (8-2) dropped their opening set of the day, 25-23, to St. Mary's (7-4) but recovered nicely, winning the next three by scores of 25-21, 26-24, and 25-21.

Laura Bland finished with 20 kills, 31 digs, two assists and a block assist, while Mya Parks notched 20 kills herself along with 20 digs, three assists and three block assists. Tempestt Frazier was also in double figures with 12 kills, six block assists and a block solo.

Liana Solomon's 54 assists is second most all-time and a new program record for a four-set match.  Solomon also recorded 22 digs, four kills and two block assists. Carson Williams added 24 digs, and Breanna Cary chipped in with 10 more.

Bland and Parks become only the second and third Pacers in program history to turn in 20 kills and 20 digs in the same match. Megan Mansfield put up a 20-20 game against Methodist back in 2013. However, Bland is in a category of her own having recorded over 30 digs. Solomon's double-double is also the first of its stature in program history. As a team, WPU established new four-set records for kills (63), assists (59) and digs (116).

The Pacers' second match of the day was virtually over before it started and the record-breaking performances kept coming. It was easily the most lopsided victory in program history, as they swept Medgar Evers (0-6) by scores of 25-2, 25-4 and 25-3.

WPU racked up a program record 34 service aces, 14 of which came from Williams, breaking the previous all-time high of 12 set by Christine Hammond. Solomon notched a career high with 10 aces as did Josie Richardson, who finished with five aces. Courtney Atkinson added three more and dished out 21 assists.

The WPU volleyball team is back in action tomorrow, starting with a 12:00 p.m. match against Brooklyn College followed by a non-conference match against Methodist at 2:00 p.m.
