Volleyball Takes Pair of Four-set Matches against Guilford, Saint Augustine's

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University volleyball team was back at the Hermann Athletic Center on Saturday, where the Pacers won both of their matches in four sets over the Quakers of Guilford College and the Saint Augustine's University Falcons.

WPU jumped all over Guilford with a 25-16, opening set win in their first match of the day. Guilford (4-4) took the second set, 25-21, but the Pacers finished things off by scores of 25-14 and 25-22.

"We stepped up bigtime and played really well against Guilford," said head coach Kevin Daniels. "Our passing was on, our blocking could have been a little bit better, but they rallied around each other which was good to see."

Freshman Mya Parks continues to impress, recording her third double-double this season with 12 kills and 20 digs. Laura Bland led the Pacers with a season high 19 kills, while Tempestt Frazier finished with nine kills and four block assists.

Liana Solomon racked up 44 assists, eight digs, six kills and a pair of block assists. Carson Williams notched 28 digs and tied her career high with six service aces. Breanna Cary did establish a career high with four service aces.

The Pacers' second match of the day got off to a much different start, sneaking past St. Augustine's with a 27-25 win in the first followed by a more comfortable, 25-18 win in the second.  It may have been a bit too comfortable though, as WPU (5-2) let their guard down and dropped the third, 25-20. Tied at 21 in the fourth, the Pacers went on a 4-0 run to close it out, 25-21.

"We talked at the end of the match about learning how to finish even though we played well overall," Daniels said. "At the end of the day, they figured it out, it just took four sets insted of three. Credit to St. Augustine's because they're a good team. They're scrappy and can jump out of the gym. We did really well combatting that and making adjustments during the game."

Parks paced the way with 16 kills, four digs and two block assists. Bland had 14 kills, eight digs, a pair of service aces and a block assist. Frazier tallied 12 kills, four block assists and a block solo.

Solomon had another solid outing with 43 assists, six kills, six digs, and two block assists. Williams posted 20 digs and four assists, while Josie Richardson recorded a career high 13 digs.

St. Augustine's Olivia Porter may have been the best player in the gym on Saturday, leading the Falcons (2-4) with 27 kills and 12 digs. Shakera Hall also had herself a game with 18 kills, nine digs and a pair of service aces.

The WPU volleyball team is on the road Tuesday for their USA South conference opener against Ferrum College at 7:00 p.m.
