CARY, NC – After splitting Saturday's doubleheader against Averett, the William Peace University baseball team dropped the series finale on Sunday, 10-2. The Pacers also recognized seniors
Wes Dumford,
Zach Geller,
Christian Neal and
Mike Sgroi in the team's final home game of the season.
Cullen Cicotte was the only Pacer with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI single that brought
Easton Payton home, who led off with a walk. Payton,
Trey Hogan and
Tyler Klinedinst chipped in with one hit apiece.
Mikey Anerton scored WPU's other run in the fourth after reaching on an error.
Neal (2-4) started for the Pacers (10-21, 2-13 USAS) and was pinned with the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits, four walks and six strikeouts in six innings. Geller pitched the seventh, Dumford worked the eighth and Sgroi closed it out in the ninth.
Kyle Walsh (4-2) went 7.2 innings to earn the win. Walsh allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, six walks and two strikeout, while Cody Johnson tossed a scoreless inning-and-a-third.
Dallas Smithers led the Cougars (17-16, 7-8 USAS) at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Kyle Vidano added two hits, scored a run and knocked in three. Trey Wall recorded two hits, scored twice and drove in two more.
The WPU baseball team hits the road for their final four games of the season, starting with a non-conference matchup at Guilford College this Wednesday. The Pacers close conference play with a three-game series at Greensboro College this weekend.
