RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University softball team closed the regular season Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against Maryville. The Pacers dropped game one, 3-1, followed by a 7-4 loss in game two.
WPU finishes the regular season 23-17 overall with an 11-9 mark in the USA South. The Pacers will go into this weekend's conference tournament as the eight seed, where they will face the top-seeded Piedmont College Lions Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. The Scots finish the regular season 22-15 and 15-5 in league play for the second seed.
Game One: Maryville 3, William Peace 1
With the Pacers down two runs in the bottom of the seventh,
Brittany Propri and
Morgan Farmer both singled to lead things off, but the Scots shut the door and held on to win, 3-1.
WPU's lone run came in the first inning, as Farmer doubled down the line to score
Lindsey Wiggins, who also doubled. The Pacers left 12 runners on base, their second highest total of the season. They left 14 stranded the previous day in a 17-8 loss to Averett.
Farmer led the way, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Wiggins and Propri both went 2-for-4.
Shay Poteat chipped in with a hit as well.
Farmer (14-6) also started in the circle and went the distance for the 16th time this season, giving up three runs on 11 hits, a walk and three strikeouts. Farmer finishes the regular ranked second in the USA South with 14 wins and 133.2 innings pitched.
Kayla Aloisi (11-8) earned the win for Maryville, allowing a run on eight hits, four walks and a strikeout in six innings of work. Casey Joliff replaced her in the seventh to record her first save of the season.
Chloe Lawrence went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the second and an RBI single in the sixth. Jessica McMahan added two hits and scored in the seventh on Gabrielle Rathmell's single to left.
Game Two: Maryville 7, William Peace 4
Heather McLean launched her fifth home run of the season in the second to tie the game at one, but the Scots scored runs in the final four frames on their way to a 7-4 win.
Wiggins finished with two hits, including her 10th home run of the season, ranking her second in the league behind teammate
Brittany Propri. Poteat went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Lindsey Coley singled and scored in the fifth. Propri,
Caroline Womble and
Kacy Haithcock contributed one hit apiece.
Kelsey Durham (4-10) started for the Pacers and was pinned with the loss with a final line of four earned on nine hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
After closing out game one, Joliff (5-1) picked up the win in a complete game effort, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits and five strikeouts.
Joliff helped her cause with a 3-for-4 game at the plate to go with three runs driven in. Alexus Murray also went 3-for-4, scored a run and drove home another.
