LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA – The William Peace University baseball team played games one and two of a three-game set at Covenant College Friday afternoon, where the Pacers dropped a pair of one-run games by the scores of 1-0 and 5-4.
Game One: Covenant 1, William Peace 0Trevor Pence (2-3) allowed one earned on seven hits, two walks and five strikeouts in a complete game effort, but he was outdueled by Garrett Kriston (6-2), who
also went the distance, holding WPU to a pair of hits while striking out 11, as the Scots held on for a 1-0 win.
Mikey Anerton and
Christian Neal were the only two Pacers to record a hit. They both singled to lead off the fifth and sixth innings and were both left stranded at third.
Covenant scored the game's lone run in the sixth. Z Arima reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on a double from Caleb Bloye, and came home on Julien Amorelli's sac fly to center field.
Game Two: Covenant 5, William Peace 4The Pacers (8-18, 1-10 USAS) rallied with four runs in the top of the ninth but came up just short, as the Scots scratched out another tight one, 5-4.
Anerton led off the ninth with an infield single and reached second on a throwing error.
Derek Beale came up next and legged out an infield single, which was also accompanied with a throwing error that allowed Anerton to score.
Tyler Tilson drove Beale home with an RBI single to make it 5-2.
Christian Neal came through with a two-run homer to really make things interesting at 5-4, but the Scots (14-13, 5-6 USAS) shut the door from there.
Cullen Cicotte was the only Pacer the entire day with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
Easton Payton and
Alex Scott recorded one hit apiece.
Wes Dumford was pinned with the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits, a walk and three strikeouts in five innings of work.
Chase Roupp tossed the final three frames, allowing an unearned run on two hits, a walk and four strikeouts.
Matt Reitz (1-4) earned his first win of the season, giving up two runs on six hits and seven strikeouts in eight innings.
Trenton Nobles went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Bloye also had a pair of hits and scored on Amorelli's single to center in the first. Alex Kerr added a hit and drove in two.
The Pacers will be back in action for their series finale tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
