WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The William Peace University women's basketball team traveled to Salem College Wednesday night, where the Pacers scratched out their second win of the season over the Spirits.
WPU (5-5) used a 9-0 run in the first quarter for an early 14-4 edge. Salem hung around the entire game, cutting it as close as 45-44 with 7:48 in the fourth, but the Pacers never relinquished the lead and held on, 53-49.
The Pacers only shot 30% (18-of-60) from the field, but they made up for it defensively, holding Salem to a 26% (15-of-58) shooting night. WPU forced Salem to cough it up 22 times and scored 24 points at the other end, while only turning it over 13 times themselves.
Brittany Boykin led the Pacers with 11 points thanks to a 7-of-10 outing at the stripe. Boykin also grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked a pair of shots.
Lakeia Jones also reached double-figures with 10 points, a team high seven rebounds and a steal.
Susannah Sykes added nine points, three boards, an assist and two steals.
Quntashea Lewis was a one-woman show for the Spirits
(2-11). Lewis played all 40 minutes and finished with 24 points, 20 rebounds, two assists and four steals.
The WPU women's basketball team will be back in action this Saturday at 2:00 p.m., hitting the road for a conference game against Piedmont College.
