Women's Basketball Fades Late in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The William Peace University women's basketball team was back in action Monday night, traveling to Methodist University. The game was tied at 38 through three quarters, but the Monarchs pulled away in the fourth for a 64-51 win.

WPU (4-5, 0-2 USAS) went on a 7-0 run to jump ahead 37-32 with 2:24 left in the third, equaling the largest lead for either team to that point. Methodist (6-3, 2-0 USAS) took over from there though, erupting for a 21-2 run over the next seven minutes, which was fueled by 8 offensive rebounds. The Pacers went 0-7 from the field, coughed it up four times, and committed eight fouls during that span.

It was a sloppy, physical affair that essentially turned into a free-throw shooting contest. Both teams combined to for 50 turnovers, 51 fouls and 69 free-throw attempts. WPU went 15-of-30 (50%) from the stripe, while the Monarchs finished the night 27-of-39 (69.2%). Methodist was also aided by a sizeable, 51-39 edge on the glass.

Brittany Boykin was one of 10 Pacers to score, leading the way with 12 points, two rebounds, four assists, four steals and a pair of blocked shots. Susannah Sykes also reached double-figures with 11 points, two rebounds and a pair of blocks. Alexis Armstrong added seven points, three steals and brought down a game high 11 rebounds.

For Methodist, Ayanna Peques scored 14 points to go with eight rebounds, an assist, two steals and a block. Alexia Hines also finished with 14 points, seven boards, an assist, four steals and a block.

The WPU women's basketball team will be back in action this Wednesday when they hit the road for a 7:00 p.m. game against Salem College. The Pacers beat Salem earlier this season in the opening round of the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament, 63-59.
