Women's Basketball Bested by Battling Bishops

ROCKY MOUNT, NC – The William Peace University women's basketball team traveled to North Carolina Wesleyan Monday night. The Pacers rallied to make it a one-point game late in the fourth after playing from behind the entire night, but the Bishops pulled away down the stretch for a 65-55 win.

The freshman trio if Hannah Ericksen, Tenae McKinzie and Susannah Sykes paced the way for WPU (5-11, 0-8 USAS). Erickson scored 16 points to go with four rebounds and a steal. McKinzie also reached double figures with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal. Sykes finished with nine points, seven boards, an assist and four steals.

NC Wesleyan (7-9, 4-3 USAS) opened up a 21-point lead with 3:52 left in the second quarter. WPU was behind 33-18 at halftime, but they came out on the other side of the break and pulled themselves within striking distance thanks to a 16-4 swing that spanned nearly six minutes.

Trailing 49-38 early in the fourth, the Pacers shot 7-of-10 (70%) from the field over the next seven minutes and change, which resulted in a 17-7 run. WPU came as close as 56-55 with 2:11 left on the clock, but the Bishops put the Pacers away by closing out the game on a 9-0 spurt.

WPU went 20-of-62 (32.3%) from the field, a slightly higher clip than Wesleyan's 20-of-72 (27.8%) night, but the Bishops got more bang for their buck, hitting six triples compared to only one for the Pacers. Turnovers continue to be a problem for the Pacers. They coughed it up 27 times, resulting in 21 points at the other end for the Bishops.

Kenyata Harris led all scorers with 22 points, nine rebounds, an assists, three blocks and three steals in only 16 minutes off the bench. KeChae Parker added 12 points, four rebounds, a block and three steals for Wesleyan.

The WPU women's basketball team is back at the Hermann Center on Wednesday, hosting Methodist University at 7:00 p.m. The Pacers lost their first meeting in Fayetteville, 64-51. The Monarchs come into the game 9-4 overall with a 4-1 mark in the USA South.
