MONTGOMERY, AL – After winning their USA South conference opener in dramatic fashion Saturday, the William Peace University women's soccer team picked up their second win of the weekend this afternoon with a 2-1, overtime win at Huntingdon.
Freshman
Janae Mays scored her second and third goals of the season for WPU (3-3-1), both of which came on penalty kicks. Senior
Mari Mitterling drew both fouls in the box.
"I don't think we played our best in the first half, even though we scored, but they came out inspired after the break and played great in the second," said head coach
Keith Jenkins. "I'm so proud of the effort, determination and fight we showed today. It was a well-deserved weekend for a team that has been working hard to get better every day."
Mitterling was pushed in the box less than seven minutes in for Mays' first goal, but Huntingdon answered in the 9th when Janna Maschino found Kyelie Cudnohoske for the equalizer. Both sides played to a stalemate the rest of the way, but WPU had their chances to close it out in regulation. The hero from yesterday's match, freshman
Alyssa Gasperini, sent a shot just wide from the wing, and then senior
Anna Tew ripped a free kick that the keeper saved out of bounds for a WPU corner.
It was only a matter of time before the Pacers struck again though, as the Hawks
(2-4, 0-2 USAS) were hit with a red card in the 83rd and forced to play a man down the rest of the way. Less than two minutes into extra time, Mitterling was taken out by the keeper after getting loose behind the defense, and then Mays slotted the game winner into the back of the net.
The WPU women's soccer team will be back at WakeMed Soccer Park next weekend for a pair of conference games. The Pacers host Piedmont Friday at 2:00 p.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. match against Maryville on Saturday.
