RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace women's basketball team fell to Averett University on Sunday, 70-52.
"We were getting shots, but they're 1-3-1 gave us some trouble, and we just couldn't seem to all get on the same page," said head coach Kelly Johnson. "We haven't been turning it over like we did today, but we made some poor decisions that hurt us, and just struggled to score."
Krystal Williams drained a three-pointer to put WPU (6-13, 3-10 USAS) up by one (14-13) midway through the first half, but Averett went on a 17-2 run over a nine minute span for a 14 point (30-16) lead at the 2:01 mark. The Cougars led by 12 (31-19) at the break.
DeJah Cheatham brought the Pacers to within seven (56-49), hitting one from beyond the arc with 3:55 remaining, but Averett (8-11, 6-7 USAS) used a 14-0 swing to put WPU away.
The Pacers turned it over a season worst 25 times and their shooting woes continued, as they went 17-of-64 (26.6%) from the field and 7-of-24 from long-distance. Averett scored 22 points off turnovers and cleaned up on the offensive glass with 21 boards for 26 second chance points.
Williams scored a season high 19 points, while Ka'la Jordan registered her second consecutive double-double with 11 points and a career high 14 rebounds. Cheatham matched her career high of 11 points. Derrica Jones had seven points and 13 rebounds.
Brianna Taylor came off the bench to lead Averett with 21 points and eight rebounds. Samm Chandler had 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Jonna Koski had 11 points, nine boards and a pair of assists.
