FERRUM, VA – The William Peace baseball team scored two runs in the top of the eighth to go up on Ferrum, 4-2, but the USA South's preseason favorites rallied with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to win game one of a three game series, 8-4.
Ferrum (2-2, 1-0 USAS) scored a pair in the bottom half of the first for an early lead, but WPU starter Wes Dumford settled in nicely the rest of the way. Dumford retired the next 12 batters he faced and didn't allow a hit until giving up a double with one away in the eighth. He also set a program record with 10 strike outs.
WPU (0-4, 0-4 USAS) tied the game (2-2) in the sixth, as Jacob Ennis continued his hot start to the season with a double to left center, plating Trey Hogan and Brian Willis. Greg Chauvin led the inning off with a double, Hogan was plunked, and then Willis reached on an error to load the bases. Chauvin was thrown out at home trying to tag up on a Josh Clark pop to left, but Ennis came through with the clutch two-out hit.
Ennis added another RBI knock in the top of the eighth to put WPU up, 3-2, and an error by Ferrum's thid baseman helped the pacers tack on an insunce run for a 4-2 edge.
Dumford retired the first batter of the eighth, but he gave up a double to Easton Riggs and was lifted in favor of Mike Sgroi after throwing nearly 100 pitches in 7.1 innings of work. Dumford didn't factor in the decisions, allowing three runs on three hits.
Sgroi retired the first batter he faced, but Ty Comer came through with an RBI single to score Riggs. Ferrum tied it up after drawing a bases loaded walk, and then Lane Deaver hit a game winning grand slam. Deaver finished the game 2-for-4 and drove in six runs, while Alex Brown picked up the win in relief.
"We played well defensively, out-hit them, and Wes pitched great," said head coach Chris Duty. "I like the way the team competed today. We were right there with a chance to win it, but we just have to find a way to get over the hump."
WPU out-hit Ferrum, 7-5, led by Ennis' 2-for-4 day. Ennis also registered three RBI, scored a run and is hitting .467 through four games this year. Tyler Klinedinst also had a 2-for-4 day with an RBI.
The Pacers will play two more tomorrow at Ferrum starting at noon.
