WPU Volleyball Splits Pair vs EMU, Wash & Lee

LEXINGTON, VA – The William Peace University volleyball team was back on the road Saturday for a pair of non-conference matches, where the Pacers beat Eastern Mennonite in five sets before falling in three to Washington & Lee.

WPU (17-8) erased a five point, 11-6, deficit in the fifth, closing the set out with a 4-0 run to come back and beat Eastern Mennonite (9-12) by the scores of 24-26, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 16-14.

Four Pacers finished with double-digit kills. Laura Bland posted a team high 15 kills to go along with five digs and block assist. Merica Ivey tallied a season high 12 kills at a .400 clip with three block assists. Lindsay Alford added 11 kills at a .400 clip and also had three block assists. Tempestt Frazier tallied 10 kills and a pair of block assists.

Liana Solomon racked up 31 assists, a career high 27 digs, a service ace and a block assist. Kennedey Paine had 19 assists, six digs and a service ace. Reigning USA South Defensive Player of the Week Carson Williams also had 27 digs and four assists. 

The Pacers went down to the wire with Washington & Lee (14-10) in the first set but lost, 25-23. WPU wasn't able to get it going again and dropped the next two sets, 25-16 and 25-13. The Pacers committed 10 more attack errors, hitting .043 as a team compared to the Generals' .326 clip.

Bland led the team with eight kills, while Alford finished with six kills, two kills and a service ace. Merica Ivey had five kills, three block assists and block solo. Liana Solomon registered 17 assists, six digs, a kill and a block assist. Maddie Irvin had a team high eight digs. Williams chipped in with seven digs, a kill and an assist.

The WPU volleyball team will be back in action this Wednesday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m., traveling to face the Monarchs of Methodist University. The Pacers won their previous match at the Hermann Athletic Center, 3-1.
