Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at Meredith

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University volleyball team was back on the court Wednesday, as they traveled just a few minutes away to square off against the Avenging Angels of Meredith College.  After an encouraging start, the Pacers folded down the stretch and lost, 3-1.

WPU took the first set, 25-21, but Meredith took over in the second and evened things up at a set apiece with a 25-15 win in the second. After losing the third, 25-17, the Pacers were right there late in the fourth trailing, 17-16, but Meredith pulled away with a 7-0 run though and closed it out, 25-17.

The Pacers fall to 11-5 overall with a 5-2 record in the USA South. The Avenging Angels took over sole possession of second place in the North Division with the win, improving to 11-6 and 6-1 in conference play.

"We just weren't mentally tough enough tonight.  We let our guard down after winning the first set, and weren't able to match their intensity the rest of the night," said head coach Kevin Daniels. "It's disappointing because I know we're better than that, but they came to play and we didn't. Luckily, we still have a lot of season left and a chance to redeem ourselves against them at our place"

WPU committed a season worst 31 attack errors compared to only 20 for the Avenging Angels. It took the Pacers five sets to reach 30 attack errors in a loss to Division II St. Augustine's earlier this year. The Pacers also committed a season worst nine reception errors and a season low two service aces.

Laura Bland was the lone Pacer to record double-digit kills with 10. Merica Ivey added eight kills to go along with four block assists and a block solo. Tempestt Frazier contributed seven kills and three block assists.  Liana Solomon also finished with seven kills and a team high 20 assists, while Kennedey Paine registered 14 assists and eight digs. Carson Williams posted a team high 19 digs. Connor Davis chipped in with 11 digs and five kills.

The WPU volleyball team returns to action this Saturday, traveling for a pair of conference matches against Ferrum at 10:00 a.m., followed by Averett at 2:00 p.m.
