CARY, N.C. – The William Peace women's soccer team took on the Hawks of Huntingdon College this afternoon and picked up their first win in the USA South behind a goal from Devin Thompson in the 14th minute. The Pacers improved their record to 3-6-1 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
"I thought we put together a solid 90 minutes, and our backline was fantastic today led by Devin in the middle who scored a great game winning goal for us," said head coach Keith Jenkins. "We certainly had more presence in the offensive third of the field, but defensively I think we just gutted it out."
Thompson's goal was the first of her career coming on a free kick from well outside the box, which she placed perfectly into the right upper 90.
Huntingdon (2-7, 1-3 USAS) made a push with six of their eight shots coming in the second half, but Shannon Maddex and the defense held strong to get the win. Maddex saved all five shots she faced on goal.
"It's great to get a win in the conference. Playing back-to-back is always tough, so it's especially rewarding to come out of the weekend with a win," Jenkins said. "Now we set our sights on Ferrum. The conference is so up in the air right now so we have to come out and play again."
The William Peace women's soccer will host Ferrum this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
