William Peace Volleyball Falls Shorts at Methodist, 3-2

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The William Peace volleyball team traveled to Methodist University this evening where they fell to the Monarchs in five sets.

The first set was tied for the 12th time following a block solo from Laura Bland which made it 18-18. The Pacers went ahead by two following a service ace from Bland and a Methodist attack error, but the Monarchs went on a 7-1 run to come back and take the first, 25-21.

WPU led 14-10 in the second until Methodist stole the momentum with a 6-0 run.  They'd lead by as many as three with the score 19-16, but the Pacers used a 6-2 swing to jump ahead, 22-21. The two teams would trade points until the score was tied at 23.  WPU would win the next two points and the set on a kill from Bland and a service ace from Megan Mansfield

The Pacers trailed early in the third, but they used runs of 3-0 and 5-0 to take a 15-12 lead. Methodist eventually battled back to take a 23-22 lead but a Merica Ivey block solo tied it up, Mansfield and Nicole Phillips teamed up for a block assists, and then WPU closed out the set, 25-23, on a kill from Ivey.

Methodist led 18-13 in the fourth following a 10-3 run, but WPU cut it to one winning tBlahe next four points. The Pacers ended up taking a 22-20 lead after a 5-0 run, but they faltered down the stretch as the Monarchs took the set, 26-24.

The Monarchs carried their momentum into the final set taking it easily, 15-7.

Bland led the way for the Pacers with a career game racking up 21 kills and 14 digs to go along with three service aces, a block solo, and a block assists. Mansfield also had double-digit kills with 11 in addition to 5 digs, 2 block solos, and 4 block assists.

Sarah Weavil had a career high 32 assists, while Carson William led the defense with 15 digs.

"We just aren't communicating and doing things well enough away from the ball," said head coach Kevin Daniels.  "We have to want it more, and we have to learn how to win"

The Pacers volleyball team will be back in action this Saturday as they travel to take on Ferrum and Averatt in Rocky Mount.
