WPU Women's Basketball Races Past Mustangs of MACU, 77-4

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace women's basketball team came out of the gates on a 17-0 run and never looked back as they opened the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament with a dominating, 77-41, win over Mid-Atlantic Christian. The Pacers will contend for the championship trophy tomorrow against Randolph College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

"We shot the ball extremely well in the first half and got some steals that led to easy buckets off of our press," said head coach Kelly Johnson.  "We were able to try some different things defensively in the second half, get some extra minutes for our girls that haven't played as much, and limit the minutes of some others, which was good with such a short turn around tomorrow."

The Pacers (1-1) shot 67.6% from the field on 23-34 shooting in the first half, including 4-7 (57.1%) from beyond the arc. Defensively, they held the Mustangs (0-5) to only 4-35 (11.4%) from the field and forced them into 20 turnovers, 15 of which came off WPU steals.  With a 55-10 lead at the half, WPU was able to cruise to the easy victory.

Brittany Boykin led all scorers with 20 points on 9-13 (69%) shooting to go along with three assists and a rebound.  Ka'la Jordan was right behind her going 8-11 (73%) from the field for a career high 19 points in addition to four rebounds, four assists, and five steals which ties her previous career mark.

Krystal Williams had nine points, five assists, and five steals.  Tamara Murphy scored a career high nine points with four rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Derrica Jones registered eight points, six rebounds, and two steals. Alexis Armstrong grabbed a team high nine rebounds to go along with four points, two assists, and two steals.  Whitney O'Quinn only scored two points but also contributed six rebounds, four assists, and five steals.

Brittany Harris and Benita Boyd led the Mustangs each scoring 10 points each.  Harris also grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double.

The William Peace women's basketball team will be back in action tomorrow vying for the Jackie Ammons championship trophy.  They'll square off against Randolph who took down Southern Virginia, 60-50.
