RALEIGH, NC – After scorching the nets in yesterday's win against Mid-Atlantic Christian, it was shooting woes that plagued the William Peace women's basketball team this afternoon as they fell to Randolph, 62-39, in the championship game of the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament.
"At the beginning of the game we weren't executing our offense, and once we did start to execute better we just couldn't hit any shots," said head coach Kelly Johnson. "I thought the defensive effort was there and kept us in the game at points, but not making shots also affects us defensively because it doesn't allow us to get in our press."
The Pacers (1-2) went 21.4% from the floor on 15-70 shooting and only managed to make one of their 19 shots from beyond the arc. They didn't help their cause at the free throw line either going 8-22 (36.4%).
Derrica Jones led the way for WPU with eight points and a career high 17 rebounds, earning All-Tournament honors.
Krystal Williams scored a team high 10 points to go along with two rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Brittany Boykin had seven points, three rebounds, two steals, one assist and a blocked shot. Tamara Murhpy also chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.
Allie Druffel and Abigail Bullins were both named to the All-Tournament team leading Randolph (3-0) to the championship with Druffel being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Southern Virginia's Crystal Cleveland and Mid-Atlantic Christian's Benita Boyd were also All-Tournament selections.
The William Peace women's basketball team will have over a week off before their next game. Thee Pacers open up USA South play at home against the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan on Monday, Dec. 1 at 7:00 p.m.
