WILMINGTON, Ohio - The William Peace University men's lacrosse team battled through three overtime periods Saturday afternoon, earning an 8-7 victory over Wilmington to improve to 2-0 on the season.
After falling behind 4-0 early in the second quarter, the Pacers began to chip away at the deficit. Caleb Garey put Peace on the board late in the second before the offense erupted for five third quarter goals. Tyler Rutherford sparked the run, and Brandon Goad followed with back to back goals off assists from Garey. William English added a man up score, and Garey found the net again to give Peace its first lead of the afternoon.
The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, with Rutherford scoring to put the Pacers ahead 7 to 6 before Wilmington answered to force overtime.
Both sides had opportunities in the first two overtime periods, but strong defensive play and key saves kept the game scoreless. In the third overtime, Garey delivered the decisive moment, scoring unassisted with 1 minute and 15 seconds remaining to secure the win for the Pacers.
Garey finished with three goals and two assists for five points, while Goad added two goals and an assist. Rutherford also scored twice in the comeback effort. In goal, Carson McGee recorded 10 saves in 70 minutes of action to earn his second win of the season.
"It was a great team win." Head Coach Troy Humphrey said after the game. "Our guys competed for four quarters and showed resilience after a tough start. I am proud of how we responded and stayed together. Now it is back to work as we prepare for Guilford on Saturday."
William Peace returns home for its home opener on Saturday, February 21 at 7 p.m. against Guilford.
