Softball Sweeps Shaw in Home Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. - Game One:

The William Peace Pacers (2-3) picked up their second win of the season, defeating Shaw University (2-1) by a score of 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon. A late three-run sixth inning launched the Pacers past the Lady Bears in a game that saw both teams battle through early errors and clutch hits.

Shaw jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of two William Peace errors. However, the Pacers responded immediately in the bottom of the frame, scoring twice, thanks to an RBI single from Reagan Stewart and aggressive base running, allowing Adanya Day to score on a first and third steal attempt.

After a quiet second and third inning, both teams exchanged runs in the fourth, with Caroline Burdsal driving in the game-tying run for William Peace on a ground ball through the infield.

With the score tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Pacers' offense broke through. Megan Hobbs came off the bench with a key single, and Burdsal came through once again, delivering a two-run double to right center to put William Peace in front. Cierra Lear followed with a single, allowing Burdsal to score on a defensive miscue to cap off a three-run frame.

On the mound, Reagan Stewart (1-1) was dominant for the Pacers, tossing a complete-game victory while allowing just four hits and no earned runs. She struck out six and walked only two, shutting down the Shaw lineup after their first-inning surge.

Game Two:

William Peace (3-3) held off a late rally from Shaw (2-2) to win 4-2 in the second game of the day. Despite Shaw's attempt to break the shutout in the final inning, Kim Bordeaux and the Pacers' defense closed out the victory.

The game got off to a fast start for William Peace in the bottom of the first, Lear led off with a triple and quickly scored on a passed ball. After Burdsal walked, Day doubled in another run, and a sacrifice fly from Lacy Smothers brought home the third run of the inning, giving the Pacers an early 3-0 lead.

From there, the pitching dominated as Bordeaux (2-1) shut down Shaw's offense, striking out 13 batters over seven innings while allowing just one hit and no earned runs. Bordeaux faced minimal trouble throughout the game and displayed excellent control, walking only one batter.

Shaw's offense struggled against Bordeaux, managing just one hit through six innings, but started to find some success in the seventh. Two batters reached base on errors, allowing Shaw to scratch across two unearned runs. However, Bordeaux remained composed, ending the rally with another strike out and securing the win for the Pacers.

The Pacers are back in action on Monday, march 3rd as they host Kenyon College for a double header match up starting at 1 PM.
