Women's Soccer Blanks Warren Wilson In Season Opener

CARY, N.C. – William Peace opened the 2024 women's soccer season with a 2-0 victory over Warren Wilson at WakeMed Soccer Park on a hot Saturday afternoon.

Play was stopped several times for water breaks in the humid 90-plus degree weather, but the heat failed to deter the Pacers from shutting out the Owls.

The season series between both teams resumed after a nine-year break. From 2012-2015, the Pacers were 0-3-1 against Warren Wilson but would not be denied Saturday.

Led by goals from Savanna Berckmiller and Emma Avery, the Pacers controlled the game from the outset. They outshot their opponent 25-2 including 16-1 in shots on goal. William Peace led in corner kicks 12-1.

Despite the Pacers' dominance, the score was tied 0-0 the first 20 minutes until Berckmiller broke the deadlock. She took advantage of the Owls' goalkeeper leaving the net in an attempt to stop her attack. The goalie did not get to the ball in time, which resulted in Berckmiller staring at a wide open net. Her shot from close range put the Pacers up 1-0, a lead which held until halftime.

The Pacers scored early in the second half off a beautifully executed corner kick. Kerlyn Navarrette Trejos placed the ball perfectly in front of the net which allowed Avery to score on a header for a 2-0 lead.

The Owls rarely threatened offensively due to a defense that included starters Liv Kanalis, Emma Mayer and Jerri Hanson, and goalkeepers Gaby Vazquez and Mackenzie Kirk. Vazquez played the first half and Kirk entered after halftime.

The Pacers are back home Wednesday, Sept. 4, against Carolina University at WakeMed Soccer Park. Kickoff is 4:30 p.m.
