Pacers Among Competitive Field In Season Opening Marlin Invitational This Weekend

RALEIGH, N.C. – Tough competition awaits William Peace when it travels to the Marlin Invitational for its season opening matches this weekend in Virginia Beach, Va.

The Marlin Invitational, set for Aug. 30-31, includes one nationally-ranked team and two others who are powerhouses in their respective conferences. Action gets underway for the Pacers Friday when they take on Invitational host Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m. and Marymount at 7 p.m. Virginia Wesleyan is ranked No. 1 in the ODAC preseason poll and Mary Washington is the two-time Atlantic East Conference champs.

Saturday's schedule includes a 2 p.m. matchup against Mary Washington, ranked 22nd in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III preseason poll. The Pacers start the morning against Geneva (Pa.), selected seventh in the PAC preseason poll.

This weekend will be a good test for the Pacers, who are no slouches. They enter the season ranked third in the USA South preseason poll. Thirteen players return from last year's squad that tied for third in the conference and qualified for the USA South Tournament. Georgia Grace Anderson is an all-conference middle blocker and setter Maegan Brylski is eight assists away from the 1,000-assist milestone.

"We are looking forward to a challenging opening weekend against strong opponents!," Pacers' Head Coach Hannah Marshall said. "Throughout the weekend, we will be able to gauge where we are at and what we need to work on to prepare for our home tournament next weekend. We can't wait to compete and get the season rolling!"
