Pacers Top Southern Virginia In First Game of Doubleheader

BUENA VISTA, Va. – William Peace scored three runs in the sixth inning to beat Southern Virginia 4-1 in the first game of a USA South softball doubleheader at Harvey-Dryden Field on Friday. The second game went eight innings before the Pacers fell 3-2.

Lydia Hunt hit a two-run double to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. Angelina Jones followed with an RBI single to give the Pacers a 4-1 lead.

Winning pitcher Reagan Stewart pitched effectively through seven innings. She scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked none.

Stewart added two hits and scored a run. Jones and Adanya Day each had two hits for the Pacers, who outhit the Knights 10-7.

Taryn Shelton put the Pacers ahead 1-0 with a one-run single in the top of the fourth inning. The Knights knotted the score in the bottom half of the fourth.

The Pacers led twice in the second game, including 2-1 in the eighth inning. The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Stewart singled in the fifth inning for a 1-0 Pacers' lead. She put the Pacers ahead again with an RBI bunt single in the eighth inning after the Knights tied the game 1-1 in the seventh inning.

Stewart went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Pacers, who had seven hits. Jones and Logan Ayers each scored a run.

Starting pitcher Rachel Mori only allowed two earned runs in the loss. She struck out two and walked one.

The Pacers will complete their four-game weekend trip against Mary Baldwin in a USA South doubleheader on Saturday, April 6. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
