Pacers Stop Randolph To Gain Split On First Day Of WPU Triangle Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace erupted for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-4 softball victory over Randolph on a cold, cloudy day to split the first day of the William Peace Triangle Classic on Friday. The game ended after six innings because of darkness.

"William Peace softball fought mother nature and a very talented Randolph College team this afternoon and came away with a nice win," Pacers Head Coach Charlie Dobbins said.

The Randolph game was the third of a tripleheader at the WPU Softball Field. The Pacers (4-6 overall) played New Paltz (NY) close before falling 5-3 in the first game. New Paultz trounced Randolph 9-1 in five innings in the second game.

Erin Miles of the Pacers batted 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs, both coming in the fourth inning. She started the four-run rally with a solo home run over the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2.

The Pacers added three runs on Ayanda Day's bases-loaded walk and a Randolph throwing error that scored Logan Ayers and Angelina Jones. Miles capped the scoring on the second bases-loaded walk of the inning for a 6-2 lead.

William Peace, the designated away team in the contest, stopped two potential Randolph scoring rallies in the latter innings. The Pacers held the Wildcats to one run in the bottom of the fourth on a double play. Jones, the second baseman, caught a line drive and threw out the runner attempting to return to first base.

Randolph had runners on first and second with one out in the fifth, but relief pitcher Reagan Stewart forced two pop ups to end the inning. Earlier in the inning, Ayers of the Pacers extended the lead to 7-3 on an RBI single that scored Jones.

The Wildcats threatened again, this time with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth but Stewart forced two fly outs and struck out a batter to get the save. Starting pitcher Kimberly Bordeaux earned the win after three full innings of action.

The Pacers scored first in the third inning when Ayers crossed home plate on an error. The Wildcats came back in the bottom half of the inning for a 2-1 lead before the Pacers' big rally in the fourth inning.

"I like where we are as a team." Dobbins said. "We still have some things to clean up, mostly on our mental prep, but I really think this team will do something special as it gets close to conference play."

In the first game against New Paltz, the Pacers rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the score heading into the seventh inning. Preston Hawkins keyed the rally with a two-run single to center field that scored Day and Stewart. Lydia Hunt scored earlier in the third inning on Cierra Lear's RBI.

New Paltz broke the tie with a two-run double in the seventh inning for the final score.

The Pacers are back at the WPU Softball Field on Sunday to face Oberlin at 10 a.m. and Pacific Lutheran at 2 p.m. on the final day of the WPU Triangle Classic.

"I hope to see a crowd on Sunday when we take on two more teams in the William Peace Triangle Classic at our home field," Dobbins said.
