Women's Soccer Downs N.C. Wesleyan 2-1

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – William Peace needed a women's soccer win in a big way, and the Pacers got it in a 2-1 victory over N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday.

The Pacers (1-2 USA South, 3-3-2 overall) were coming off a 5-0 home loss to Southern Virginia on Saturday and were set to face a N.C. Wesleyan squad that was in the upper half of the USA South Conference standings.

The situation seemed daunting but the Pacers played with grit and pulled out the victory, their first in the conference this season.

"This was a great team win for us, getting an important three points on the road," Head Coach Becky Scroger said. "The girls really worked hard today and played together."

Lily Rust scored the eventual game-winner late in the contest. Her goal at the 75-minute mark put the Pacers back ahead after N.C. Wesleyan (2-2-1 USA South, 4-8-1 overall) tied the score in the first half. Mia Rumachik of WPU scored the game's first goal nearly eight minutes into the contest.

The Pacers won despite being outshot 7-4. Pacers' goalkeeper Kirk Mackenzie totaled three saves and held N.C. Wesleyan to one goal.

The victory gives the Pacers momentum as they attempt to climb up the conference standings after a slow start. They will look to build off Tuesday's win in a league game against Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
