Men's Soccer Triumphs 1-0 Over Southern Virginia

CARY, N.C. – William Peace stayed in the hunt for a USA South Tournament berth with a 1-0 men's soccer victory over Southern Virginia at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday.

The Pacers, now 1-3-1 in the USA South, are tied with Pfeiffer for the sixth and final spot in the standings after getting their first conference win. The top six teams in the eight-team league will qualify for the USA South Tournament, which begins Nov. 2.

"I'm just really proud of this team for continuing to work hard and believe in each other," WPU Head Coach Ryan Huber said. "It's great to get three points tonight, now we turn our focus to playing a tough Methodist team next week."

William Peace (4-6-3 overall) has two games left in the regular season – at Methodist on Oct. 26 and home against Greensboro on Oct. 30. Both games are important as the regular season winds down.

The Pacers downed a solid Southern Virginia team on Saturday. The Knights, 2-3 in the USA South and 7-4-2 overall, entered the contest on a two-game win streak and are currently fifth in the league standings.

But Ethan Gillette scored on a Nathan Cochran assist in the first half and the Pacers' defense, sparked by goalkeeper Ayden Miller, didn't allow a goal for the key win.

The Pacers were aggressive offensively. They outshot the Knights 20-12 including 12-6 in the first half when they scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

There were five yellow cards in the physical contest, including four by Southern Virginia.
