Men's Soccer Rallies To Stop Methodist For Second Consecutive Win

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – William Peace is finishing the men's soccer regular season with a flourish.

The Pacers won their second straight game, a 2-1 come-from-behind road victory over Methodist on Saturday which helped their chances of making the USA South Tournament for the seventh consecutive year under Head Coach Ryan Huber.

A victory on Senior Day against Greensboro on Wednesday, Oct. 30, would cement a tournament bid for the Pacers, 2-3-1 in the USA South and 5-6-3 overall. The top six teams advance to the conference tournament, and right now, William Peace is tied for fifth in the standings with one game remaining in the regular season.

"I am really proud of the guys on tonight's win," Huber said. "It's always good when you can create goals from set piece moments. We work a lot on set pieces, so to score two and come from behind for a big league win was huge for our group."

William Peace knocked off Methodist on the Monarchs' Senior Day with a big second-half push. The game was scoreless until the Monarchs (2-2-2 USA South, 6-6-4 overall) scored early in the second half for a 1-0 lead. The Pacers wasted no time tying the game, scoring two minutes later on Gavin Beaupre's third goal of the season.

Nine minutes later, Ausar Omwenga put the Pacers ahead for good with a goal around the 69th minute for a 2-1 lead, which stood until the final second elapsed. The goal was Omwenga's third third this season.

The Pacers turned the tables after halftime after being outshot (10-1) and having less corner kicks (5-0) in the first half. In the second half, they outshot the Monarchs (7-3) and had more corner kicks (5-2). Goalkeeper Ayden Miller collected eight saves for William Peace to offset the goal allowed in the second half.

There were 12 yellow cards combined in the physical battle.

The Pacers will look to finish the regular season strong against Greensboro on Senior Day at WakeMed Soccer Park on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
