Men's Soccer Rallies But Falls To N.C. Wesleyan

CARY, N.C. – The USA South season opener for William Peace lived up to its billing as the top two teams in the conference preseason poll faced off.

Unfortunately, the Pacers fell 2-1 to N.C. Wesleyan at WakeMed Soccer Park on Wednesday night. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for William Peace, now 0-1 in the USA South and 3-4-2 overall. N.C. Wesleyan is now 2-0 in the conference and 4-2-4 overall. N.C. Wesleyan and William Peace were picked to finish first and second, respectively, in the USA South standings.

The contest was competitive as expected. It was very physical as well as seven yellow cards were handed out.

The Battling Bishops scored first in the intense battle and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Pacers were charged up in the second half, outshooting N.C. Wesleyan 13-5. Their attacking offense led to a penalty kick for Jorge Lemus, who booted the ball past the goalie in the back of the net. His score, the fourth this season for him, tied the game at 1-1 to the delight of the vocal home fans.

Ten minutes later, N.C. Wesleyan re-took the lead around the 79-minute mark. The Battling Bishops scored near the net off a missed shot for the final score.

The Pacers outshot the Battling Bishops 16-11 in the defeat. Both teams totaled four corner kicks and the Battling Bishops led in fouls 10-7.

William Peace will visit Mary Baldwin in Staunton, Va., on Saturday, Oct. 5, in a USA South matchup. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
