Volleyball Topples Mary Baldwin, Falls To Greensboro in Tri-Match

STAUNTON, Va. – William Peace defeated Mary Baldwin in four sets before falling to Greensboro 3-1 in a volleyball tri-match Saturday at the Physical Activity Center on Mary Baldwin's campus.

The Pacers are 6-5 in the USA South and 13-11 overall after the tri-match split. They maintained their sixth-place spot in the conference standings which would earn them a bid in the USA South Tournament if the season ended today. The top eight teams in the 10-team league during the regular season will advance to the postseason tournament.

William Peace started the morning by trouncing Mary Baldwin after a slow start. After losing the first set 32-30, the Pacers routed the Fighting Squirrels 25-15, 25-13 and 25-16 to sweep the season series 2-0.

Jordan Juanes tallied 18 kills, eight digs and three aces while Chassie Jacops added 11 kills and three blocks for the Pacers, who recorded 13 aces. Maegan Brylski finished with 37 assists and six digs and Jacqueline Janecek accumulated 13 digs. Alyssa Poteat tied Juanes with three aces.

Shortly after beating Mary Baldwin, the Pacers were back on the court against Greensboro, a team they swept 3-0 a month ago.

Two sets determined the match's outcome. The score was tied 22-22 in the first set but the Pride scored the last three points for a 25-22 win. The Pacers fell behind 2-0 after losing the second set 25-11 but regrouped to win the third set 25-17.

William Peace came close to forcing a fifth set. The Pacers led 22-21 but were outscored 4-1 to fall 25-23 in the fourth and deciding set.

Juanes totaled 18 kills and eight digs and Jacops added 11 kills for William Peace. Maegan Brylski collected 41 assists, 13 digs and three aces and Georgia Grace Anderson had three blocks. Jacqueline Janecek tallied 16 digs.

The Pacers are home Wednesday, Oct. 23, against Methodist at the Hermann Athletic Center in a USA South match. Game time is 7 p.m.
