Ellison Scores School-Record 43 In Pacers' Loss

RALEIGH, N.C. – Standout guard Tanaesha Ellison poured in a school-record 43 points for William Peace in a 95-83 USA South women's basketball loss to Salem at the Hermann Athletic Center on Wednesday.

Ellison broke the previous single-game record held by Tia Saunders, who scored 42 points against Meredith in 2004. The scoring mark stood for 20 years until Wednesday.

It is the latest achievement for Ellison, who was named USA South Player of the Week on Monday and selected to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week on Tuesday. Last Saturday, the Asheboro, N.C., native recorded a triple double.

The junior guard added 14 rebounds, eight steals and four assists for the Pacers, who kept pace with the Spirits until the second half. The score was even at 40-40 during the break, but the Pacers (2-5 USA South, 4-9 overall) were outscored 28-18 in the third quarter.

The Spirits (3-2 USA South, 7-5 overall) pushed their lead to 12 in the fourth period but Ellison sparked a 17-10 rally to pull the Pacers within 80-75 around the five-minute mark. The rally included seven straight points by Ellison, who scored on a layup, three-pointer and jumper which sliced the deficit to five points. The Pacers would get no closer as the Spirits closed out the contest with a 15-8 run.

Despite her record scoring day, Ellison could not offset the Pacers' woes at the free throw line. The Pacers made 24 of 40 free throws for 60 percent while the Spirits were 22 of 27 for 81.5 percent.

Ellison led four players in double figures. Allye Woodruff and Brene'a Daye each scored 11 points and Nautica Smiley chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. For Salem, Alize Munn had 35 points and 14 rebounds and Dionne Simpson finished with 24 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals.

The Pacers will be on the road the next two games. They take on Greensboro on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. and crosstown rival Meredith on Sunday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m.
