Volleyball Opens Season 2-0 On Day One Of Averett Cougar Classic

DANVILLE, VA -- William Peace University volleyball began the regular season with two big wins, taking a 3-0 win over Bob Jones and a 3-0 win over Roanoke.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE - BOB JONES

Set One (25-20)
The Bruins would take an early 6-2 lead in the first set, but a few attack errors and two service aces from Hannah Ward would put the Pacers up 10-9. Kills from Shelby Cooper and Georgia Grace Anderson would increase their lead to 15-12, while a kill and a service ace from Kelsey Bierbauer would bring the score to 19-16. The Bruins would battle back late as they trailed 23-20, but a final kill from Hannah Collier and an attack error would give the Pacers a 25-20 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set Two (25-23)
Set two would be a back-and-forth contest, with a few service aces from Bierbauer putting WPU up 7-5. A kill from Hannah Collier would increase the Pacer lead to 12-10, but the Bruins would fight back to trail just 18-17. A few more kills from Collier, Georgia Grace Anderson and Shelby Cooper would hold off the Bruins for a 25-23 win and a 2-0 lead.

Set Three (25-23)
The Pacers would take a 4-0 lead in the final set with kills from Hannah Collier and a service ace by Mackenzie Russell. A kill and service ace by Shelby Cooper would keep the Pacers up 9-6. A 5-point run from the Pacers would give them a 17-14 lead. The Bruins would bring the score to 24-23 as they battled back, but a final kill from Kelsey Bierbauer would secure a 25-23 win for the Pacers and a 3-0 match win.

GAME TWO - ROANOKE COLLEGE
Set One (25-13)

The Pacers would dominate the first set, taking an early 8-7 lead with a few kills from Hannah Collier and Landis Limon. A few service aces would put them up 12-8, while a 5-point run would give them a 17-10 lead. A big 7-point run with kills from Shelby Cooper, Kelsey Bierbauer, and Georgia Grace Anderson would put the Pacers ahead 24-11, while a final kill from Cooper would secure the 25-13 win.

Set Two (25-17)
The Maroons would take a brief 6-3 lead before a 4-point run from the Pacers would put them ahead 10-8. A few kills from Georgia Grace Anderson and an ace from Mackenzie Russell would bring the score to 14-9. Kills from Jordan Juanes, Landis Limon, and Madeline Simpson would increase the Pacer lead to 21-13. A few errors and a kill by Hannah Collier would secure the 25-17 win and put the Pacers up 2-0 in the match.

Set Three (25-23)
Set three would be a back-and-forth contest, with kills from Nancy Gamewell, Chassie Jacops, and Tameka Adams putting the Pacers up 4-2. A few aces from Logan Moore would increase the Pacer lead to 16-9, though the Maroons would battle back to trail by just 18-17. A few final kills from Chassie Jacops and a block from AJ Townsend and Tameka Adams would give the Pacers a 25-22 win and finish the game 3-0.

  • Katelyn Landkrohn led the Bruins with 14 digs.
  • Rylee Mayer led the Maroons with 13 kills in game two, while Kylee Draper added 25 assists.
