Pacers Fall In Extra Innings Of Thrilling Conference Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- William Peace University baseball fell 11-10 in extra innings after a hard-fought rally against the Methodist Monarchs. The Pacers would trail 7-2 after four innings, but would battle back to send the game to extra innings. A walk-off homerun from the Monarchs would give them the 11-10 win in the bottom of the 12th.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pacers would get on the board first at the top of the second as Patrick Rogan's single would bring home Jake Dacunto for a 1-0 lead. The Monarchs would respond in the bottom of the inning as a double from G. Wheeler would bring in two runs to put them up 2-2. A sac fly from Brett Kemp at the top of the third would tie it 2-2, but a homerun from S. Nelson in the bottom of the inning would put the Monarchs up 3-2. The Monarchs would have a big fourth innings, holding the Pacers while adding 4 runs to lead 7-2.

The Pacers would start to rally at the top of the 7th as a single from Logan Barbour would put the score at 7-3. At the top of the 8th, a double from Brett Kemp would drive in Hunter Ward to cut the Monarchs' lead to 7-4, while a single from Cameron Butler would bring in Kemp to put the score at 7-5. At the top of the 9th, Kemp would single to center field to score Nick Tyler for a score of 7-6, while a double from Jake Dacunto would score Hunter Ward and Tyler to give the Pacers an 8-7 lead. The Monarchs would respond to tie it 8-8 in the bottom of the 9th as the game headed to extra innings.

A single from Kevin Gonzalez at the top of the 10th would put the Pacers up 9-8, but the Monarchs would score on a sac bunt to again tie it 9-9. A quick 11th inning would add no runs, with the Pacers scoring on a fielding error at the top of the 12th. However, J. Austin would hit a walkoff homerun to drive in two runs in the bottom of the 12th and secure an 11-10 win despite a great battle from the Pacers.

PACER TOP PERFORMERS FOR THE FOES
  • J. Austin went 3 for 6 with 3 RBIs including his walk-off homerun.
  • W. Hall was 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs.
