Pacers Go 1-2 In USA South Crossover Tournament

BREVARD, NC -- William Peace University volleyball completed the USA South Crossover Tournament at Brevard College. The Pacers fell to Covenant College and Maryville College, both by a score of 3-0, but would come back to take a 3-0 victory over Brevard College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE - COVENANT COLLEGE


Set One (16-25)
In set one, the Scots would tally the first four points to lead 4-0. A kill by Shelby Cooper would cut their lead in half to 4-2, the Scots would go on a 4-point run to lead 8-2. A few blocks by Landis Limon would bring the Pacers back within 3 as they trailed 11-8. Kills from Georgia Grace Anderson, Shelby Cooper, and Kelsey Bierbauer would give the Pacers a 5-point run as the Scots led 17-14. However, Covenant would control the rest of the set to win 25-16.

Set Two (23-25)
The Pacers would take an early 4-2 lead in set two with a few kills from Georgia Grace Anderson, but the Scots would go on a run to lead 7-4. A kill from Kelsey Bierbauer would bring WPU within one as they trailed 13-12, with a service ace from Hannah Ward tying the set 18-18. An ace from Vivian Camplin would tie the set again 21-21, but the Scots would hold the edge to take set two 25-23 and lead the match 2-0.

Set Three (18-25)
In the final set, the Scots would gain traction early to lead 5-2. A few blocks and a kill by Georgia Grace Anderson would bring the Pacers within one as they trailed 7-6, but the Scots would continue to roll to lead 16-12. Despite a late push from the Pacers, Covenant would take the final points of the set to win 25-18 and take the match 3-0.

GAME TWO - MARYVILLE COLLEGE

Set One (23-25)
A service ace from Logan Moore would give the Pacers an early 2-1 lead, but a 6-point run would bring the score to 8-3 in favor of Maryville. The Scots would take a commanding 17-8 lead before a 5-point run from the Pacers would cut their lead to 17-13. The Pacers would continue to battle, with kills by Shelby Cooper and Kelsey Bierbauer bringing WPU within one as they trailed 19-18. Another kill by Bierbauer would tie the set 23-23, but Maryville would clinch the next two points to win the set 25-23.

Set Two (13-25)
In set two, the Scots would get out to an early 4-0 advantage, but kills from Hannah Collier and Landis Limon would bring the score to 4-3. A kill from Kelsey Bierbauer would tie the set 7-7, but Maryville would go on a 7-point run to lead 14-7. Another quick run would give them a 20-9 edge, and they would control the remainder of the set to win 25-13 and take the match 2-0.

Set Three (17-25)
In the final set, Maryville would take an early 5-0 lead. Kills from Jordan Juanes and Mackenzie Russell would tie the set 9-9, but a short run by the Scots would give Maryville a 15-10 lead. The Pacers would battle back, but another 5-point run would bring the score to 23-14 in favor of the Scots. Despite a good effort from WPU, the Scots would take the final set 25-17 to win the match 3-0.

GAME THREE - BREVARD COLLEGE

Set One (25-15)
In the first set, a kill by Kelsey Bierbauer would give the Pacers an early 5-2 lead. The Tornados would tie the set 6-6, but the Pacers would go on a 4-point run to lead 18-14, with service aces from Hannah Collier and a kill by Shelby Cooper. A 7-point run with kills from Cooper, Bierbauer, and Georgia Grace Anderson would finish the set 25-15 for the Pacers to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set Two (27-25)
Set two would prove to be a tight contest, with a kill by Kelsey Bierbauer tying it 6-6. The Tornados would take over, going on a few runs to take a strong 21-13 lead. However, the Pacers would battle to win 8 in a row and tie the set 21-21. The Tornados would keep things close, but two kills by Shelby Cooper would give WPU a 27-25 win in set two and put them ahead 2-0 in the match.

Set Three (25-12)
A kill by Georgia Grace Anderson would tie set three up 6-6, but from here the Pacers would control the remainder of the game. A 6-point run with kills from Hannah Collier and Shelby Cooper would give WPU an 18-10 advantage. The Pacers would continue to dominate, only allowing Brevard two more point and taking the set 25-12 to win the game 3-0.

PACER TOP PERFORMERS FOR THE FOES
  • Kyla Bailey tallied 9 kills in game one for Covenant.
  • Isabella Samson led Maryville with 13 kills and 3 aces, while Meredith Bonee tallied 37 assists.
  • Ashley Hoxit led the Tornados with 9 kills.
STATS OF THE GAME
  • Covenant tallied 10 blocks in comparison to WPU's 5 in game one.
  • Maryville recorded 9 blocks in comparison to WPU's 4 in game two.
NEXT GAME
The Pacers will travel to Rocky Mount, NC to take on NC Wesleyan College in their first conference game of the season. The game is scheduled for 7PM on September 22nd.
