Mickens Sets New WPU Record As Pacers Finish XC Season At USA South Championships

ROCKY MOUNT, NC – On Saturday, the William Peace University men's and women's cross country ran at the USA South Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship, and had outstanding results. The day saw several highlights, specifically a new record on the women's side.

William Peace was familiar with the course, as they ran at North Carolina Wesleyan College twice in the abbreviated spring season. It allowed the Pacers who competed last year to start very well in the women's 6K championship, which was the first race to go off. Shawntez Mickens led the charge for the Pacers. Her time of 26:26.7 was a new record for herself as well as the William Peace women's program.

Caitlin Bobbit followed her closely, finishing with a time of 26:44.7. The mark was good enough for a career-best for her as well. Alana Morgan, Abigail Joachim, and Claire Boaz rounded out the five for the Pacers. All three followed their teammates, setting new bests in the 6K at William Peace. With those results the team was able to claim seventh-place, beating half of the conference.

The men's 8K followed the women's race, and like most of the season, Daniel Steele led the way for the WPU. Steele was able to stop the clock first for the Pacers, barely missing out on a new PR, which was set a couple of weeks ago.

Ethan Davis, Connor Thomas, and debutant Kenneth Wilkes were the next three to cross the line. The three harriers finished one after the other, separated by a total of 40 seconds. Jacob Allen and Sean Todd rounded out the team's performers on the day, and they did the same as the previous three. Todd came in right after Allen, 11 seconds behind, in what was his first race at the 8K level.

Mickens and Steele were named to their respective All-Sportsmanship teams, with Mickens earning the nod for the second year in a row.
