Volleyball Splits The Day At Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, VA -- William Peace University volleyball split the day at the Mary Baldwin University Quad-Match, defeating Mary Baldwin University 3-0 but falling in a close contest to Southern Virginia University 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME ONE - MARY BALDWIN UNIVERSITY
Set One (26-24)
In set one, Mary Baldwin would get out to an early 3-1 until a kill from Kelsey Bierbauer would tie the set. Kills from Georgia Grace Anderson and Hannah Collier would give WPU a 9-6 lead. The Fighting Squirrels would go on a 4-point run to lead 11-10, but a kill by Shelby Cooper would tie it up 14-14. Mary Baldwin would push back to take back a 20-17 lead, but a block from Kelsey Bierbauer and Landis Limon would tie it 21-21. Shelby Cooper would notch the final points of the set to give the Pacers a 26-24 win.

Set Two (25-13)
The Pacers would dominate the second set, taking an early 4-1 lead. A 5-point run with a few service aces from Emerson Scollo would bring the score to 9-2, while a few kills by Kelsey Bierbauer would give the Pacers a 12-3 advantage. A 4-point run with kills from Landis Limon, Shelby Cooper, and Hannah Collier would increase their lead to 18-9, with kills from Limon and Bierbauer and a final service ace from Shelby Cooper securing a 25-13 win in set two.

Set Three (25-18)
In the final set, Mary Baldwin would lead 5-3 early. A kill from Hannah Collier would tie it up 10-10, while a service ace from Logan Moore would give the Pacers a 14-12 lead. An ace by Hannah Ward would bring the score to 18-14, and a final 3-point run with a kill by Madeline Simpson would secure a 25-18 win in the set and a 3-0 match win for the Pacers.

GAME TWO - SOUTHERN VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

Set One (25-20)
The Pacers would lead set one early, with a service ace from Shelby Cooper putting them up 6-4. Kills from Cooper and Kelsey Bierbauer would increase their lead to 9-4. A 3-point run would put them up 12-6, with a few service aces from Mackenzie Russell bringing the score to 16-8. The Knights would make a late push back, but a final kill from Shelby Cooper would win set one 25-20 for the Pacers.

Set Two (22-25)
Set two would be a back-and-forth contest, with it tied early 6-6. The Pacers would take a brief 10-8 lead, but a 5-point run from the Knights would give them a 15-13 edge. A 3-point run by the Pacers with kills from Kelsey Bierbauer would close the gap to 19-17, and a kill by Hannah Collier would tie it 22-22, but the Knights would take the last three points to win 25-22 and even the game 1-1.

Set Three (25-17)
In set three, the Pacers would take an early 3-1 lead. A 4-point run with kills from Georgia Grace Anderson and Hannah Collier would increase the lead to 11-6, while a kill by Landis Limon would put them ahead 15-9. A kill by Shelby Cooper would bring the score to 21-15, and a final kill by Hannah Collier would win the set 25-17 and give the Pacers a 2-1 lead in the game.
 
Set Four (23-25)
Set four would be a close contest, with an ace by Shelby Cooper tying it 6-6. A quick run with a kill from Hannah Collier would give the Pacers a 13-11 lead, but the Knights would quickly tie it 13-13. The Pacers would take a late 22-20 advantage, but the Knights would battle back to win the set 25-23 and tie the game 2-2.

Set Five (12-15)
The Knights would control the final set early as they led 5-2, but kills by Kelsey Bierbauer would put the Pacers within one as they trailed 5-4. A kill by Hannah Collier would bring the score to 10-8, still in favor of the Knights. Georgia Grace Anderson would bring the Pacers back within one as the Knights led 13-12, but SVU would take the final two points to win 15-12 and take the game 3-2.
