Pacers Fall 83-80 After Late Rally From Monarchs

Raleigh, NC -- William Peace University men's basketball fell 83-80 in a tight matchup against Methodist University. A big second half would give the Pacers an edge, but a late rally by the Monarchs would propel them to the 83-80 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • John Burwell would give the Pacers some early momentum in the first half as he would tally a quick nine points to give WPU an early 12-6 lead. The Monarchs would fight back to tie the game 13-13, but a shot from behind the arc by Jalen Owens and another layup by Burwell would give the Pacers an 18-13 lead.
  • The Pacer defense was tested as the team ran into some foul trouble, allowing the Monarchs to take a 27-22 lead. Beau Bryant and Smith Gupton would both add shots from behind the arc to close the gap, with a layup by Gupton putting the Pacers within 1 as they trailed 31-30. Cole Atwood would drain two threes, with Beau Bryant's late layup sending the Pacers into halftime trailing 45-43.
  • Smith Gupton would start the Pacers off in the second half with a quick shot from behind the arc to give them a 46-45 lead. A few shots from the foul line and a 3-pointer by Burwell would increase the lead to 57-48. Cole Atwood would give the Pacers a ten-point lead as his shot from behind the arc brought the score to 60-50. 
  • The Pacers would keep the momentum going as Smith Gupton and Jalen Owens would give the team a 70-56 lead. Burwell would notch his 22nd point of the game with a drive under the net as the Pacers led 74-64. Methodist would begin to make up some ground at the end of the second half, with Garren Dearman tying it up 74-74. The remaining minutes would be a back-and-forth contest, but the Monarchs would eventually edge out the Pacers to win 83-80.

PACER TOP PERFORMERS
  • John Burwell led the team with 22 points as he shot 52.9% from the field.
  • Smith Gupton added 16 points as he went 57.1% from behind the arc.

FOR THE FOES
  • Garren Dearman led the team with 23 points while adding 8 rebounds
  • Dante Burden contributed 22 points for the Monarchs.
