Pacers Pick Up Big Win Over Sweet Briar

The William Peace University women's lacrosse team picked up an (18-12) win over Sweet Briar College on February 22nd, 2020.

THE BASICS
  • Final score: William Peace 18, Sweet Briar College 12 
  • Records: William Peace (1-1), Sweet Briar College (0-3)
  • Location: Amherst, VA

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sweet Briar started off the game by going up (1-0) in the first four minutes of the game. The Pacers responded with a goal from Allison Schaper. The Vixens of Sweet Briar College brought the score to (2-1) off a draw control. Allison Schaper from Anne Evans responded offensively for the Pacers and tied the score at (2-2). The Vixens went up (4-2), but Allison Schaper responded once again with two goals both from free position to tie the score at (4-4). 
  • Sweet Briar would end the Schaper hot-streak and go up (6-4). Allison Schaper ended the Vixen run with a solo goal to put the score at (6-5) and bring the Pacers within one. The Pacers continued with their offensive spark with a goal from Jessika Schutte to tie the game at (6-6) and Anne Evans tallied her second assist on the day. The Pacers continued their scoring run with another goal from Allison Schaper and a goal from Anne Evans.  Sweet Briar had a free position opportunity, but it was blocked, and the Pacers continued to keep control of the game and ended the half (8-6).
  • The Pacers picked up where they left off in the first half with a goal from Rylie Toomey on a free position to put the score at (9-6). Allison added another goal on the day also on a free position opportunity to put the Pacers up by four (10-6). Sweet Briar responded with a goal, but once again Allison Schaper put one between the pipes to electrify the Pacer offense and put the score at (11-7). Sweet Briar once again put one on the board, but Brittany Wortman responded with a goal and Amber Griffin tallied her first assist of the day to put the score at (12-8). Rylie Toomey would add to the Pacer lead with a goal (13-8). Anne Evans added a goal to her two assists on the day to bring the score to (14-8) and extend the Pacer lead.
  • The Sweet Briar Vixens would score three unanswered goals to cut the Pacer lead to just three (14-11). Rylie Toomey and Allison Schaper each responded with a goal to extend the Pacer lead to five (16-11). Allison Schaper added her 10th goal and Rylie Toomey added her third assist of the day to bring the score to (17-11). The Vixens added another goal to put the score at (17-12), but it would be too little too late and the Pacers would hold off the Sweet Briar offense for the remainder of the game. Amber Griffin sealed the deal with a goal in the final minute of the game for a final score of (18-12).

PACER TOP PERFORMERS
  • Allison Schaper would tally 10 goals for the Pacers and 1 assist to total 11 points on the day. 
  • Rylie Toomey contributed 6 points, 3 goals and 3 assists .
  • Alyssa Martinez made 8 saves between the pipes for WPU.

FOR THE FOES
  • Goalie Sydney Campbell tallied 8 saves. 
  • Victoria Lawson had 3 goals and 3 assists.
 
STATS OF THE GAME
  • WPU tallied 32 shots to Sweet Briar's 31.
  • WPU and Sweet Briar each notched 18 ground balls.
  • WPU had 20 draw controls to Sweet Briar's 12.

The Pacers will host Piedmont College on February 29th. Game time is scheduled for 12 PM in Holly Springs, NC at Ting Park.
