Pacers Advance To USA South Semifinals With Win Over Huntingdon

The Pacers won the USA South Conference Quarterfinal over Huntingdon (72-61) and will now advance to the USA South Conference Semifinal against Piedmont College on Saturday, February 29th.

THE BASICS
  • Final score: William Peace University 72, Huntingdon College 61

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pacers started off hot by going up (8-2) with a pair of 3-pointers from Cierra Baker and Khadijah Daniels as well as a jumper from Jaymesha Sanders. The Hawks responded with their own jumper and a pair of layups to bring the score to (10-8). In this contest, the Pacers and Hawks would continue to battle and at the end of the first quarter the score was (15-10), ending with a jumper from Lauryn Cross. 
  • The Pacers extended this lead with a layup from Jaymesha Sanders (17-10). A pair of free throws from Sydney Austin helped the Pacers maintain the lead (19-12). The Hawks responded with a jumper and a layup to cut the Pacer lead to just three (19-16). The Hawks continued to battle and tied the game at (21-21). A shot from Lauryn Cross took back the Pacer lead (23-21). The Hawks would tie the game again, but Lauryn Cross hit back to back shots from behind the arc to regain the lead (29-23). Cross hit another 3 pointer to extend the Pacer lead (33-25). A pair of free throws from Cierra Baker further extended the Pacer lead to 10 (35-25). The Hawks went on a (5-0) scoring run to cut the Pacer lead to just 5 (35-30). The half ended with a layup from Lauryn Cross to put the score at (38-30)
  • The Hawks would strike first in the second half with a layup, but Khadijah Daniels responded by drawing a foul and making both free throws to maintain the lead (40-32). Cierra Baker would continue to roll with another shot from behind the arc to keep the Pacers in the lead (49-38). Kiera Williams would drive in the paint for 2 (53-46), while Nautica Smiley would end the quarter with a layup (57-46).
  • Baker would add another 3-pointer in the 4th quarter (62-55), while a layup by Jaymesha Sanders kept WPU in the lead (64-57). Lauryn Cross and Mariah Partin would tally some consecutive free throws (70-61), while Jaymesha Sanders would add a final two points in the remaining seconds to secure the Pacer win (72-61).

PACER TOP PERFORMERS
FOR THE FOES
  • Shaonica Thomas led the Hawks with 16 points.
  • Ry Whetsone recorded a double-double with 11 boards and 15 points.

STATS OF THE GAME
  • The Pacers shot at 43.9% from the field and 46.2% from behind the arc.
  • Both teams tallied 42 rebounds.

NEXT GAME
The Pacers will travel to Berea College for the semifinals of the USA South Tournament next Saturday, February 29th. They will face Piedmont College in a 3PM matchup.
