Pacers Secure #1 Seed In The East With Thrilling Victory Over The Pride

The William Peace University women's basketball team defeats Greensboro College in the final game of the regular season by a score of (70-69). With the win, the Pacers are crowned the outright regular season champions of the USA South East Division.

The contest was full of lead changes from the very beginning. While the Pacers were leading at the end of the first quarter (17-12) and at half (33-27), Greensboro relentlessly fought back, taking the lead (50-49) at the end of the third. Tension ruled until the very last seconds, as Jaymesha Sanders secured the win for the Pacers after a superb offensive rebound and putback layup to make it (70-69).

Coach Grahm Smith had this say after the win, "I'm very proud of the way our girls battled the entire game through some adversity, and could have easily given up but they continued to fight, focus on defense, getting some good stops, scoring when we needed to score down the stretch."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first quarter, Jaymesha Sanders put the Pacers on the board first with a nice jumpshot, but Greensboro quickly took a (5-2) lead. Mikayla Ray stormed to the basket for a layup, and on the next possession, Cierra Baker scored a jumper to put the Pacers up (6-5). After another lead change, Mikayla Ray sunk two free throws to tie the game (8-8). Khadijah Daniels (1) and Lauryn Cross (2) combined for 3 free throws to put the Pacers up (11-10). Lauryn Cross hit a jumper to increase the lead to (13-10). Khadijah Daniels and Kiera Williams ended the quarter for the Pacers by camly sinking two free throws each (17-12).
  • Greensboro started off the second quarter strong, taking an (18-17) lead. But, the Pacers soon took back the lead with a Jaymesha Sanders jumper (19-18). William Peace soon found themselves down by four, until Mikayla Ray knocked down a shot from downtown, reducing the lead to one (22-23). Kierra Williams scored on a looping assist from Lauryn Cross and made the free throw for the three-point play to tie the game (25-25). Sydney Austin executed a perfect block, leading to Mikayla Ray's layup (27-27). Lauryn Cross swished a three, followed by a three from Mikayla Ray with only seconds remaining to end the first half (33-27).
  • To start the third quarter, Mikayla Ray made a free throw to increase the lead (34-27), but Greensboro responded, reducing the lead to three (34-31). Khadijah Daniels completed a powerful layup to go up (36-31). Jaymesha Sanders and Lauryn Cross both got a layup through, making the score (40-35). Jaymesha Sanders scored a jumper (42-39), but Greensboro tied the game up (42-42), then took their first lead of the second half (42-44). Eva Holloway swished a jumper (44-46). Lauryn Cross nailed a three to make the score (47-50). Mikayla Ray made a layup to close the gap to (49-50) by the end of the third quarter.
  • The Pacers stole the lead at the start of the fourth quarter (51-50) after Lauryn Cross had an exquisite steal followed by a layup. On the next possession, Cross struck again with another two (53-50). Eva Holloway made an arching jumpshot (55-52). Khadijah Daniels drove to the basket for two, then added two free throws soon after to increase the lead (59-52). A jumper from Eva Holloway assisted by Mariah Partin made the score (61-55). Mariah Partin sunk two free throws (63-55). Greensboro led a comeback to take the lead (63-64), but Jamesha Sanders answered with a make from beyond the arc (66-64). Khadijah Daniels cooly sunk two free throws (68-66), but Greensboro took back the lead (68-69). With under ten seconds remaining, Jamesha Sanders grabbed an offensive rebound, then put it back to take the lead (70-69), sealing the game for the Pacers!
