Pacers Battle Through 17 Innings For Resilient Win Over The Tigers

The William Peace University baseball team battled through 17 innings for a well-deserved (5-3) win over Hampden-Sydney college.

THE BASICS
  • Final score: William Peace 5, Hampden-Sydney 3
  • Records: William Peace (4-0), Hampden-Sydney (0-1)
  • Location: Hampden-Sydney, VA

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pacers started off hot in the top of the 1st. Hunter Ward singled to center field to drive in  Tyshawn Barrett and Jackson May also hit an RBI single to bring the score to (2-0). The Pacers held steady in the bottom of the 1st by going 3 up, 3 down. Hampden-Sydney responded with a 2 RBI triple in the bottom of the 2nd. The score remained tied through the 4th, and in the top of the 5th the Pacers regained the lead. It started off with a Nate Holt single, followed up with Holt stealing second to put himself in scoring position. Tyshawn Barrett walked and Nate Holt stole third base on a wild pitch. Tate Proctor drove in Holt on a sacrifice fly and advanced Barrett to second. The Tigers would get out of the inning with only one run scoring, but the Pacers left one man on base. The bottom of the 5th proved to be challenging for the Pacers, but the Pacers got out of that jam with a chaotic unassisted double-play by Sam Peddycord

Tyshawn Barrett came up with a big defensive play for the first out of the bottom of the 6th. In the bottom of the 7th, the Pacers made a pitching change by putting in freshman Phillip Berger. An RBI single drove that run home to tie the game at (3-3), but the Pacers limited the Tigers to just one run. The Pacers and Tigers would battle and send the game into extra innings. Brendan Shea was sent to the mound for Berger. A single to left field for the Tigers ended Shea's time on the mound. Logan Barbour came in and got a swinging strikeout to get the third out for the Pacers to send it to the 12th. The game would remain deadlocked until the top of the 17th inning, when Logan Barbour would hit a triple into left center to bring home Kyle Lowke and Tyshaw Barret for a (5-3) Pacer lead. Barbour would close out the final 6.1 innings, allowing no runs and just three hits to secure to (5-3) win for the Pacers.
