Raleigh, NC -- The William Peace University men's soccer team defeated Ferrum College in their home opener by a score of 5-1. The Pacers now improve to a record of 2-1-1.

The Pacers took control of the game early in the first half. Sophomore Ivan Ponce challenged Ferrum keeper Daniel Golden at the 13 minute mark, but was unable to find the back of the net. Freshman Peter Darden put the Pacers on the board first at the 27 minute mark, with an assist by sophomore Sammy Suazo. Ferrum would tie the game 1-1 late in the first half with a goal by Jeffrey Calix, and the game would head into halftime tied at 1.

In the second half, the Pacer offense got rolling. Ivan Ponce would put the Pacers ahead 2-1 with a header from his own rebound and an assist from junior Jose Garcia. Freshman Kofi Appiagyei would give WPU a 3-1 lead at the 70 minute mark, while Jose Aguirre would record his first goal of the season just a few minutes later, assisted by sophomore Kieron Williams for a 4-1 Pacer lead. Just two minutes later, sophomore Mamadou Diabi would increase the WPU lead to 5-1 with an assist from freshman Osciel Dominguez.

The Pacers will head to Greensboro, NC for their first conference match-up against Greensboro College (1-2-1). The September 14th game starts at 4 p.m.
