Greensboro, NC -- The William Peace University men's soccer team tied with Guilford College on the road 2-2 after battling back from two deficits. The Pacers now hold a record of 1-1-1.
The Quakers started the match aggressively, testing the Pacer defense early on. Pacer keeper Jacob Smith came up with a save at the 12 minute mark on a shot down the center by Guilford's Ricky Aguilar. Shortly after, freshman Osciel Dominguez and sophomore Jorge Aguilar had consecutive shots just twenty seconds apart, forcing Quaker keeper Fisher Athey to be sharp in net. The Pacers put on the pressure just before the thirty minute mark, with shots from freshman Kofi Appiagyei and Jorge Aguilar. Aguilar grabbed a rebound on his initial shot but was unable to put it past the Quaker goalkeeper. WPU controlled the end of the first half with 8 shots on goal, but the game went into halftime tied 0-0.
In the second half, freshman Rush Campbell would get the first chance with a shot off the post, but the Quakers' Ricky Aguilar would score first at the 51 minute mark after some confusion in front of the net allowed him to score on the rebound. The Pacers continued to control the game offensively, and a pass from junior Jose Garcia would set up senior Ivan Ponce to tie the game 1-1 at the 66 minute mark. Guilford's Ricky Aguilar would get his second goal of the night, scoring on a penalty kick opportunity to give the Quakers a 2-1 lead, but Ivan Ponce would also notch his second goal of the night to tie the game at 2-2 on a breakaway chance.
Neither team would have many chances in the first overtime period, and the game would remain tied heading into the second overtime. Freshman Reid Taylor and Alex Hernandez would both put a shot on the net just a minute into the second overtime period. Neither team would be able to find the back of the net, resulting in a 2-2 tie.
