Pacers Open Wildcat Invitational with Victories Over Marian University and Rockford

Denver, CO -- The William Peace University women's volleyball continued their impressive win streak as they won their first two games of the Wildcat Invitational and improved to a 5-0 record. The Pacers swept the Sabres of Marian University 3-0 before sweeping the Regents of Rockford University 3-0.

 

GAME ONE

In set one, the Sabres would grab an early 4-1 lead. A service ace by junior Bergin Gillespie tied the set at 4-4, and the Pacers took control of the set from there. WPU would score 7 points in a row to lead 13-5 with several consecutive kills from junior Brienna Laskowski.  Marian University battled back to trail 13-8, but WPU would take another 4 points in a row thanks to junior Abby Benton to lead 17-8. The Pacers won the set 25-16.

  Marian University would take another 2-0 lead in the second set, only for WPU to tie it up 3-3 on a service ace from Bergin Gillespie. The Pacers tallied an impressive 8 points in a row to lead 16-5, with points from Abby Benton, freshman Shelby Cooper, and senior Mya Parks. A late push by the Sabres wouldn't be enough and the Pacers would win the set 25-14 on a service ace from Abby Benton to lead the match 2-0.

  In the third and final set, the Pacers would take a quick 4-0 lead, but the Sabres tied it up at 6 before taking an 8-6 lead. The Sabres would then record 5 in a row to lead 14-10, eventually taking an 19-12 lead. WPU fought back to trail 19-15 with points from Mya Parks and freshman Emerson Scollo. Marian led 24-19 late in the set, but the Pacers continued to push and recorded a tough 7 points in a row, with two service aces from Abby Benton winning the set 26-24 and the game 3-0.


GAME TWO
Game two would see the Pacers continue to roll as they bested Rockford in three sets (25-20, 25-17 and 25,20). The Pacers would deliver with an all around team performance as 10 different Pacers would get involved in the attack and register at least one kill. Brienna Laskowski would lead the way with eight kills followed by Abby Benton and Mya Parks with seven kills. The Pacers continued to impress with their defensive work as bergin Gillespie and Mya Parks both registered 19 digs.

  • Monica Dreifuerst led the Sabres in game one with 14 kills and 14 points, while Amber Yahr had 31 assists.

WHAT'S NEXT:

The Pacers will conclude the invitational tomorrow at 1 p.m. eastern time against Lewis & Clarke College before returning to North Carolina to prepare for the Guilford College Invitational on September 13th and 14th.
