Winston Salem,NC -- William Peace Volleyball went 1-1 on the day in a USA South Tri-Match hosted by Salem College on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers bested Mary Baldwin University (3-1) before falling to Salem College (0-3) in the second game. William Peace is now 11-4 overall and 1-2 in USA South play.
GAME ONE:
Set number one would see the Pacers get off to a strong start as they took an early 3-0 lead after a kill from Brienna Laskowski. Mary Baldwin would answer with a four point run to take a 4-3 lead. The two teams would go back and forth down the stretch in the first set with Mary Baldwin eventually earning a 23-18 lead. The Pacers would fight back as they tied the game at 24-24 after a pair of kills from Brienna Laskowski and one from Brittany Carpenter. After a Mary Baldwin timeout the Fighting Squirrels would close the set out 26-24 thanks to a block from Madison Varner.
The Pacers would come back strong in set two as they would jump out in front early 13-6 with a five point run ,which included four consecutive kills from Emerson Scollo. Mary Baldwin would again answer William Peace as they stormed back to take a 16-15 led by Michaela Beverly who contributed three timely kills. Two errors from Mary Baldwin would be the start of a William Peace rally as they fought back with seven straight points to take a 22-16 lead. Kills from Brianna Davis and Brienna Laskowski would give the Pacers a 25-21 win in set number two.
William Peace would only trail once in the last two sets versus Mary Baldwin. In Set number three the Pacers would never trailed and comfortably. Brianna Davis and Brienna Laskowski would spearhead the attack for WPU in set three as they cruised to a 25-12 win in set three. Set four saw Mary Baldwin lead 2-1 early on but the Pacers led by timely kills from Emerson Scollo would be enough to see William Peace seal the win with a 25-20 win in set four.
GAME TWO:
Set one would see the Pacers off to a strong start, scoring eight points and to the Spirits one. The Pacers would score a few more points but would commit multiple errors and would let the Spirits cut the lead to one 11-10 Pacers. The Pacers and Spirits would trade points back and forth before the Spirits would go on a three point run and would take the lead for the first time in the set 14-15 Salem. The Pacers would go on a four point streak and retake the lead led by kills from Jasmine Smith 18-15. Unfortunately for the Pacers, they only scored two of the last total 12 points and the Spirits would take the first set 25-20.
The second set would start with an offensive push from the Spirits putting them up 4-0. A kill from Jasmine Smith would put the Pacers on the board and from there the Pacers and Spirits would trade points back and forth. A service ace from Bergin Gillespie would tie the set up 6-6. The match would remain close but the Spirits on top. A late match push from William Peace would bring them within one (20-21) but the Spirits would answer back and finish the second set and take set two 25-21.
Set three would start with an early push from the Pacers putting them up 5-2. The Pacers would then allow the Spirits to go on a nine point streak and take the lead 11-5. The set would go back and forth before the Pacers went on a four point streak to bring them within two 14-16. The Spirits would score six uncontested points and retake a healthy lead 22-14. A very heavy late offensive push from the Pacers would keep the set going but it would ultimately not be enough to fully comeback and the Spirits would take set three 25-20.
