Pacers tie with the Panthers after late goal forces overtime

Raleigh, NC -- The William Peace University men's soccer team tied with LaGrange College on September 22nd by a score of 1-1. The Pacers now hold an overall record of (4-2-2) and a conference record of (2-1-1).

In the first half, WPU got off to a quick start, with sophomore Ivan Ponce getting in front of the net to score his fifth goal of the season and give the Pacers a 1-0 lead. Ponce continued to pressure the Panther defense, putting keeper Lucas Wright to work as he tallied 3 shots on goal in the first half. Freshman Andres Lopez recorded the assist on Ponce's goal. Keeper Jacob Smith faced a shot at 37:38, and he kept the Pacers in the lead heading into halftime.

The Pacers would continue to control possession in the second half of the game, sending several shots towards Lucas Wright. The Panthers had a penalty kick chance at 70:03 but they were unable to convert. Ivan Ponce had several more shots on goal in the 2nd half, including one that just missed off the crossbar at 77:26. LaGrange continue to put on the pressure and Asher Hendon found a way past Jacob Smith to tie the game 1-1 with just five minutes remaining. Ponce would get another good chance at 88:41 but he would hit the post and the game would head into overtime tied at 1. 

In the first overtime period, neither team could get much offense going until the last few minutes. Freshman Peter Darden would nearly score on a header at 98:03, while Panther Blake Webb had the last chance of the first overtime at 99:39, but both keepers were quick and the game would remain tied into a second overtime period. The Pacers struggled a bit in the second overtime, collecting three yellow cards. Despite a last-minute header by junior Jose Garcia, the game would end in a 1-1 tie.
